LESSON 12: THE POWER OF FILM, VIDEO AND TV IN THE CLASSROOM
“ Next to the home and school, I believe television to have a more profound influence on the human race than any other medium of communication.” - Edgar Dale
Introduction
The appeal of visual media continues to make film, video and television as educational tools with high potential impact. They are now more accessible and less cumbersome to use.
The film, the video and the tv are indeed very powerful. Dale (1969) says, they can:
While the film, video and tv can do so much, they have their own limitations too.
Basic Procedures in the Use of TV as a Supplementary Enrichment
For enrichment of the lesson with the use of tv, we have to do the following:

The appeal of visual media continues to make film, video and television as educational tools with high potential impact. They are now more accessible and less cumbersome to use.
The film, the video and the tv are indeed very powerful. Dale (1969) says, they can:
- transmit a wide range of audio – visual materials
- bring models of excellence to the viewer
- bring the world of reality to the home and to the classroom through a “live” broadcast or as mediated through film or videotape
- make us see and hear for ourselves world events as they happen
- be the most believable news source
- make some programs understandable and appealing to a wide variety of age and educational levels
- become a great equalizer of educational opportunity because programs can be presented over national and regional networks
- provide us with sounds and sights not easily available even to the viewer of a real event
- can give opportunity to teachers to view themselves while they teach for purposes of self-improvement
- can be both instructive and enjoyable.
While the film, video and tv can do so much, they have their own limitations too.
- Television and film are one way communication device consequently, they encourage passivity.
- The small screen size puts television at a disadvantage when compared with the possible size of projected motion pictures.
- Excessive tv viewing works against the development of the child’s ability to visualize and to be creative and imaginative skills that are needed in problem solving.
- There is much violence in tv.
Basic Procedures in the Use of TV as a Supplementary Enrichment
For enrichment of the lesson with the use of tv, we have to do the following:
- Prepare the classroom.
- Pre-viewing Activities
- Viewing
- Post-viewing
- •Go to the questions you raised at the pre-viewing stage.
- Tackle questions raised by students at the initial stage of the post-viewing discussion.
- Ask what the students learned.
- Summarize what was learned.
MY INSIGHTS
Lesson 2: Technology: Boon or Bane?
Nowadays, we all know that technology has a big impact to people especially the young ones. Education now seems incomplete without technology. It was stated in the book that, "Technology is a blessing for man. With technology, there is a lot that we can do which we could not do then." In this lesson, technology have its advantages and disadvantages in which it could be our reminder on what we are going to do with technology if it is right or wrong. Its advantages are like we can easily communicate to our loved ones who lived/worked in other country, it helps in making our work more easier to do, we can gain more information and we can be entertained. Its disadvantages are like people can harm others through social sites, students can get informations from the Internet that aren't good, students can be more dependent in technology specifically in making projects.
Lesson 7: Direct Purposeful Experiences and Beyond
When we say direct, purposeful experiences and beyond, this has something to do with learning by doing in which students are given the chance to do such things on their own. It is our firsthand experiences that make us learn concepts and skills effectively. Example of this is climbing a mountain is first hand, direct experience. Seeing it done in films or reading about it is vicarious, substitute experiment. It is clear therefore, that we can approach the world of reality through the senses and indirectly with reduced sensory experience. Through the use of first hand direct experiences, it becomes purposeful once a student is able to apply and use the experience in their lives. These direct purposeful experiences must lead our children to a realization that every lesson learned has a purpose and is beneficial to an individual. Through teaching, learners will be able to apply the lesson in their everyday lives and the significance why teachers teach certain things. It can also be apply to real life situation which is very useful to the learners.
Lesson 8: Teaching with Contrived Experiences
Contrived experiences are edited copies of reality and use as substitutes for real things when it is not possible to do or bring the real thing in the classroom. One example of this is the globe in which we cannot bring the real globe inside the classroom so it is represented by a model. Through that, it enable students to easily understand the lesson being discussed.
Lesson 10: Demonstrations in Teaching
Demonstration in teaching has something to do with showing how a thing is done and emphasizing of the salient merits, utility, efficiency of a concept,a method or a process or an attitude. Demonstration cannot be done without the demonstrator and the audience. For example, you are promoting a certain product so in order to convince your audience to buy that product, you need to demonstrate first all about that product. It is very important to integrate demonstration in the field of teaching in order for the learners to easily understand how a thing is being emphasized.
Teachers not only demonstrate specific learning concepts within the classroom, they can also participate in demonstration classrooms to help improve their own teaching strategies, which may or may not be demonstrative in nature. When using the demonstration model in the classroom, the teacher, or some other expert on the topic being taught, performs the tasks step-by-step so that the learner will eventually be able to complete the same task independently.
Lesson 12: The Power of Film, Video and TV in the Classroom
In this lesson, I could say that it is not necessary that every classroom should have these kind of instructional materials since not all schools can afford to buy/provide especially those schools located far from the urban places. These instructional materials also need electricity in order to work. But film, video and TV are very useful to the learners in the sense that they will know the happenings before when they are not yet born like watching some films/videos that were aired long time ago. They will also be more updated of the new trends of the world. Through these, learners will be more globally competitive.
Having film, video and TV in the classroom will help lessen the burden of the teachers and the students. So for example, in terms of having a presentation in the classroom, the teachers can use the powerpoint presentation instead of the traditional one since it is less cumbersome to use.
